What is Zeyzelf®?

Zeyzelf® is a twice weekly patch used to treat mild to moderately severe Alzheimer’s dementia. Following are some answers to common questions about using Zeyzelf®.

What Zeyzelf® twice weekly is and what it is used for

The active substance of Zeyzelf® rivastigmine. Rivastigmine belongs to a class of substances called cholinesterase inhibitors. In patients with Alzheimer’s dementia, enzymes cause certain nerve cells to die in the brain, resulting in low levels of a substance that allows nerve cells to communicate with each other.

Rivastigmine works by blocking these enzymes, helping to reduce the symptoms of Alzheimer’s disease.

How do I use the patch?

The patch only needs to be applied twice a week.

Less frequent application means a simpler routine and fewer disruptions for
caregivers. With the ease of a fixed day, twice a week, carers can more easily
plan the dosing schedule for the patient’s and their own convenience.

Example of a dosing schedule. Twice weekly patches should be applied on fixed days, at an interval of 4 and 3 days, respectively.¹

How do I remember when to
change the patch?

The special adhesive cover can be written on with the date of application and/or the date it should be removed helping carers record and track the medication.

The patch helps reduce the risk of missed doses or taking medicine twice by mistake.

Does the patch stay securely on?

Skin adhesion is very important. Zeyzelf® comes with an oval shaped adhesive cover to keep the patch safely and comfortably on, enabling patients to carry on with their normal daily activities. The adhesive cover provides security with peace of mind for the patients and their care givers.

Does the twice weekly patch work as well as a daily patch?

Zeyzelf® twice weekly contains the same active drug (rivastigmine) as the daily patch and provides the same dosage form, and they are designed to be absorbed into the body at the same rate and extent, meaning they are expected to produce the same therapeutic effect and have the same safety and efficacy. The twice weekly patch minimising fluctuations in drug levels and potentially reducing side effects.

What are the side effects compared to a pill?1

As Zeyzelf® is a patch, not a pill, it means it avoids the stomach and the digestive system. This makes it more tolerable and is particularly beneficial for older patients who may have a sensitive stomach or suffer from Gastrointestinal issues (GI). Fewer people using Zeyzelf® reported nausea, vomiting, or diarrhoea compared to those taking oral medication. Skin reactions are usually mild, and the patch has been designed to stick well with less irritation as its only applied only twice a week versus the daily patch.

Is Zeyzelf® suitable for people with swallowing difficulties?

Many people with Alzheimer’s Dementia have trouble swallowing pills which can make taking oral medication challenging. Zeyzelf® is applied to the skin and delivers medicine without the need to swallow, making it a great alternative to oral medicines.

What if I take other medicines? 1,12,14

Zeyzelf® is less likely than a pill to interfere with other medications, which is especially helpful for people taking multiple medications but please make sure you have checked all medication with your doctor.

Always talk to your doctor or pharmacist

If you or someone you care for has been prescribed Zeyzelf®, they can guide you on how to use the patch properly and help you get the
most out of your treatment.

How do I remove my Zeyzelf® twice weekly transdermal patch?

Gently pull at one edge of the adhesive cover to remove it slowly together with the transdermal patch from the skin. If the transdermal patch remains on the skin, gently pull at one edge until it is completely detached from the skin. In case the adhesive residue is left over on your skin, gently soak the area with warm water and mild soap or use baby oil to remove it. Alcohol or other dissolving liquids (nail polish remover or other solvents) should not be used. You should wash your hands with soap and water after removing the patches. In case of contact with eyes or if the eyes become red after handling the patch, rinse immediately with plenty of water and seek medical advice if symptoms do not resolve.

Can I wear the Zeyzelf® patch when I am bathing, swimming, or in the sun?

Bathing, swimming or showering should not affect the patch. Make sure the patch does not loosen during these activities. Do not expose the patch to any external heat sources (e.g. excessive sunlight, saunas, solarium) for long periods of time.

What I do if a patch falls off?

If a patch falls off, apply a new one, then replace it at the same time as usual.

When and for how long should I apply your Zeyzelf® twice weekly transdermal patch?

To benefit from treatment, you must apply a new patch twice weekly, latest after four days, preferably at the same time of day.

Only wear one rectangular transdermal patch and an oval adhesive cover at a time and replace the patch with a new one twice weekly on two fix days.

What if I use more Zeyzelf® twice weekly than you should?

If you accidentally apply more than one rectangular transdermal patch, remove all the patches from your skin, then inform your doctor that you have accidentally applied more than one patch. You may require medical attention. Please refer to the patient information leaflet in your pack.

What happens if I forget to use Zeyzelf® twice weekly?

If you find you have forgotten to apply a patch, apply one immediately, if treatment has not been interrupted for more than three days. Replace then this patch at the usual time the usual day to come back to your dosage scheme. Do not apply two transdermal patches to make up for the one that you missed. If you have not applied a patch for more than three days, do not apply the next one before you have talked to your doctor.

What if I stop using Zeyzelf® twice weekly?

Tell your doctor or pharmacist if you stop using the patch. If you have any further questions on then use of this medicine, ask your doctor or pharmacist.
